Dixie State's women's volleyball team won its third-straight PacWest Conference match during its seven-game homestand as the Storm outlasted Concordia in four sets, 25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, Monday night at the DSU SAC. With the victory DSU improved to 6-7 overall, 3-2 in league play, while the Eagles fell to 6-8, 2-2 in conference.
The Storm trailed by 10-6 early in set one, but slowly chipped away at the deficit before squaring the match at 15-15. DSU then took the lead for good with a 5-1 spurt and held off the Eagles to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams battled back and forth in the early going of set two, though the Storm looked as if they were going to pull away after breaking a 10-10 tie with a 6-2 run to take a 16-12 lead. However the Eagles would claw back by outscoring DSU 8-1 to take a commanding 20-17 advantage. DSU would again rally with three-straight points to pull even at 20-20, then with the score tied at 24 apiece, the Storm would score the final two points of the set, topped off by a
Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS) ace, to lead 2-0 in the match.
Concordia never trailed in set three, though the Storm stayed within striking distance throughout as the set featured six ties, but this time the Eagles would prevail by scoring the last two points of the stanza to draw to within a set at 2-1. Dixie State would again rally from behind in the final frame as the Storm erased at 19-16 Eagle lead to eventually pull even at 20-20. The two teams traded points on until the DSU put together back-to-back kills from
Gianna Kioa (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird HS) and
Lindsay Jones (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) to set up match point at 24-22. After a Concordia kill cut the lead in half, Kioa put the match away with her six kill of the night.
"It was good to see the girls finish tonight," Head Coach
Robyn Felder said. "We definitely didn't want to go to five [sets]. Both teams have played three games in five days, and you could tell they were tired. I knew whoever could get that last bit of momentum could finish the game. The crowd played a huge role in those last five points. That helped the girls out a lot."
Dixie State finished with 54 kills for the match, including 11 from Duryea and 10 from Jones. The duo also recorded two solo blocks as DSU finished with seven for the match. The Storm also recorded a season-high 91 kills, with three players reaching double figures, led by reigning PacWest Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) with 31, while
Sidney Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS) and
Talia Brown (Kahuku, Hawai'i/Kahuku HS) each had 15 off the bench. DSU hit .178 as a team.
Dixie State continues the homestand this Saturday afternoon as welcomes in Azusa Pacific for match at 12 noon at the DSU SAC.
