Men's Soccer Defeats Point Loma For First PacWest Win

The Dixie State men's soccer team scored an early goal and rode the momentum the rest of the way in a 1-0 defeat of Point Loma at Hansen Stadium on Homecoming Saturday. The win marks the first Pacific West Conference win of the season for DSU.

The Storm found themselves with a throw in deep in Point Loma territory in the fifth minute and made it count. Sophomore  defender Bryan Baugh (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) launched the ball in from the right side and junior defender Jason Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) headed it home for his second goal of the season.

Dixie State thought it had extended its lead to two goals just 10 minutes later when senior defender Jorge Echavarria (Oakley, Calif./Alhambra HS) headed another Baugh throw in into the goal, but the Storm were whistled for a foul before the play ended. Both teams attempted three shots in the first half, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.

The second half started in aggressive fashion as the teams combined for a total of 14 shots in the period. Dixie State attempted eights shots, while Point Loma attempted six shots. The Storm nearly added another goal with 15 seconds remaining in the match when three different players had a chance to score, but each shot was turned away, and the game ended at 1-0 in favor of Dixie State.

Junior goalkeeper Bradley Trella (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler HS) came up big for the Storm in goal, turning away shot after shot to keep the Sea Lions out of the scoring column. Trella finished with five saves and recorded his second shutout of the season.

Dixie State improves to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in PacWest play with the win. The Storm return to action next week in a two-game California road swing at Dominican on Friday and Holy Names on Sunday.
