The Dixie State football team kicks off its six-game slate in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday, as the Red Storm (1-2) look to bounce back from its second double-digit loss of the season in a Homecoming clash with Azusa Pacific (2-1). GNAC KICKOFF: The Storm open their eighth and final season of GNAC play, the first coming in 2008 after two seasons as an independent. Dixie State holds a 2-5 mark in GNAC openers, its victories coming in back-to-back seasons on Sept. 17, 2011 vs. Simon Fraser (42-7) and Sept. 8, 2012 vs. Western Oregon (24-10). The Red Storm were picked to finish in fifth place in the GNAC preseason coaches poll, while Azusa Pacific was picked to repeat as conference champions. Dixie State recorded its best GNAC season in 2013, finishing with a 4-6 record in conference play.
LAST MEETING: Oct. 18, 2014. Terrell Watson rushed for 198 yards and five of seven touchdowns as Azusa Pacific rolled to a 49-27 win over Dixie State at Citrus Stadium. The Cougars amassed 445 yards of offense, while Dixie State finished with 429 yards in defeat. Senior receiver

ALL-TIME VS. APU: Saturday's game marks the 12
th meeting between Dixie State and Azusa Pacific. The teams first met on Oct. 28, 2006 at Cougar Stadium in Azusa, Calif., a 38-20 victory for the Cougars. The Storm picked up their first win in the series on Oct. 25, 2008, a 30-23 nailbiter in Azusa where neither team led by more than seven points. Dixie State won two of the next three meetings between the teams, last winning on Sept. 15, 2012. The Cougars lead the all-time series with an 8-3 mark and own a five-game winning streak since the last Dixie State victory.
RUSHING ATTACK: Dixie State leads the GNAC and ranks 24
th nationally in total rushing offense with 708 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries. The Storm, led by freshman quarterback
Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) and senior running back
DeJon Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Arleta HS), average 236 yards per game and 4.9 yards per carry. Through three games, Barney has tallied 295 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries. Coleman leads the GNAC in rush yards per carry, averaging 6.8 yards per carry, and overall has rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries.
KNOW YOUR FOE: Azusa Pacific enters the game with a 2-1 record after defeating West Texas A&M and Simon Fraser, with a loss to Humboldt State sandwiched between the two wins. The Cougars rank third in the GNAC in total offense, averaging 412.3 yards per game, with a balanced rushing and passing attack. Sophomore quarterback Chad Jeffries has completed 62 of 99 passes for 833 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions, while freshman running back Kurt Scoby has rushed for 300 yards and three touchdowns on 54 carries.
APU ranks fifth in total defense in the GNAC, giving up 403.7 yards per game. Through three games, the Cougars have allowed 612 yards (204 per game) on the ground and 599 yards (199.7 per game) through the air. Junior linebacker Sam Flemming and senior linebacker Errik Manning lead the defensive attack with 24 and 21 tackles respectively.
Freshman kicker Jacob Hall leads the way on special teams, converting on 3-of-5 field goal attempts this season, while freshman punter Blaine Aguiar averages 38.1 yards per punt.
