GAME NOTES (PDF)

The Dixie State football team travels to Arcata, Calif. this week to battle No. 25 Humboldt State in a Saturday evening matchup at the Redwood Bowl. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Pacific Time (7 p.m. MT), as the Storm look to carry the momentum of last week's win with them on the road. Live audio coverage is scheduled on radio (ESPN SportsRadio 97.7 FM) and Internet (SouthernUtahLive.com), with Keric Seegmiller on play-by-play.

LAST MEETING: Nov. 15, 2014. It had been over two years since a kickoff had been returned for a touchdown and over five years since a pick-six, but even individual success could not aid the Red Storm as they fell to Humboldt State, 71-13, to close out the 2014 season. Senior linebacker Aubrey Reed (Pittsburgh, Penn./Wilson (WA) HS) returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and junior linebacker Trevor Oakley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown, but Dixie State could not overcome six first-half touchdowns scored by the Lumberjacks. Senior receiver Nate Stephens (Redding, Calif./Shasta HS) led the Storm offense with four catches for 97 yards, and senior linebacker Robert Metz (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro HS) was one of three defenders to finish with nine tackles.

ALL-TIME VS. HSU: Saturday's game marks the 19th meeting between Dixie State and Humboldt State. The teams first met at Hansen Stadium in St. George on Sept. 23, 2006, with the Lumberjacks winning the inaugural game, 48-28. The Storm picked up their first win in the series on Oct. 20, 2007, a 17-10 victory at Hansen Stadium that sparked a four-game winning streak for Dixie State in the series. Humboldt State rattled off seven consecutive victories following the DSU win streak, and the teams have split the last four meetings. The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 12-6, with a 7-2 record in Arcata and a 5-4 mark in St. George.

RUNNING WILD: Dixie State rushed for a school-record 404 yards last week in a 49-20 victory over Central Washington. Senior running back DeJon Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Arleta HS) led the attack with 125 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Freshman quarterback Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) made the most of his first collegiate start, rushing for 95 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Senior running back Myles Burton (Berkeley, Calif./Angelo Rodriguez HS) and freshman quarterback Tyson Blackner (Draper, Utah/Alta HS) also ran for touchdowns to round out the six Red Storm rushing touchdowns. Burton only needed one chance, a 25-yard scamper, to get in the end zone. Blackner finished with three carries for 54 yards, capped by a 37-yard dash across the goal line.

KNOW YOUR FOE:  Humboldt State enters the game newly ranked in the AFCA Top-25. The Lumberjacks check in at No. 25 in the latest poll, after defeating Western Oregon at home and knocking off then No. 17 Azusa Pacific on the road to start the season at 2-0. HSU does most of its damage on the ground, averaging 261.5 yards rushing of a total 424.5 yards per game. Sophomore running back Ja'Quan Gardner leads the attack, averaging 215 yards rushing per game. Gardner's 201 yards rushing against Western Oregon and 229 yards rushing at Azusa Pacific have landed him back-to-back GNAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The Lumberjacks also have seven passing touchdowns on the season to go with the potent running attack. Sophomore quarterback Robert Webber, after being named GNAC co-Freshman of the Year, is off to a solid start in 2015, completing 27-of-43 passes for 326 yards and the aforementioned seven touchdowns. Webber's favorite targets include junior receiver Chase Krivashei (five touchdowns) and sophomore receiver Sage Burmeister (two touchdowns).

Senior defensive back Eric Paopao and junior defensive back Daniel Castro lead the Humboldt State defensive attack with 16 tackles each through the first two games of the season. As a team, the Lumberjacks have two interceptions and one fumble forced and recovered on the season.
