LAIE, Hawaii - The No. 8 Dixie State softball team beat BYU-Hawaii in Laie in both games of a doubleheader to start its Hawaiian road trip. DSU won 8-0 and 8-2 to set the tone for its 12-game road trip.
Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) improved to 9-0 with her eigth complete game and third shutout for the win in game one.
Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) went 3 for 4 and 3 for 5 in the two games.
Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) also collected six hits on the day and stole four bases. As a team, Dixie State ran all over the Seasiders (4-10, 2-4) for 10 stolen bases on the day.
Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) won game two with a complete game to give the Red Storm (15-5, 6-0) a clean sweep of the twin bill.
Game 1
Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) got things started with a two-run bomb in the top of the first. Gelter finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and scored two runs in game one.
The Red Storm broke it open in the top of the third, starting it off with a double by
Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) to drive in Chavez and Bassett.
An RBI groundout from
Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) and triple to left by
Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) plated Gelter and Dixie State led 6-0 in the top of the third.
DSU added two more later on and cruised to an 8-0 win with Duncan shutting down the Seasiders.Â
Game 2
It was the first and third innings again that put Dixie State in control of game two.
Chavez doubled to drive in Bassett in the first and a bases-loaded triple from Woodfall made it 4-0 in the third.
The Red Storm didn't stop in the third and added one more with an RBI double by
Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School).
Feickert gave up an RBI double in the bottom half of the third to make it 5-1 but Dixie State added three more just to make sure.
Base knocks by Chavez and Hine accounted for two and a solo homer by Paulson made it 8-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Seasiders picked up one run but no more and Feickert picked up her fifth win of the year.
Dixie State plays BYU-Hawaii in two more games tomorrow, starting at 3 p.m. MT in Laie.
