CEDAR CITY, Utah - The 23-game winning streak for the No. 5 Dixie State softball team came to an end with a 5-4 loss to Division I Southern Utah University on Wednesday.
Dixie State (29-6, 20-0) got an early lead but the Thunderbirds (10-16) went ahead late and hung on to win it over the Red Storm. A late rally wasn't enough to make a come back and keep the streak alive.
Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) went 3 for 4 with an RBI while
Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) and
Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) each collected two hits. Beardshear also started the game in the circle and went four innings, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks.
Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) took the loss after giving up three runs in her two innings of relief, dropping to 12-4 on the season.
DSU struck first with an RBI single from Beardshear in the first to drive in Bassett. Two more runs came in on a misplayed fly ball to center hit by
Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School), scoring two more for a 3-0 lead early.
In the second, SUU came back with two runs on a double, trimming the lead to 3-2.
Southern Utah tied it up in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly. With runners on second and third a single gave SUU it's 5-3 edge heading into the top of the seventh.
After
Sarah Good (Castle Rock, CO/Castle View) got on to lead off the inning for DSU, Woodfall singled her home to make it a one-run game at 5-4. The two-out rally came up short and the Red Storm dropped its first contest in over a month.
Dixie State will play Colorado Mesa in doubleheader Thursday at 3 p.m. MT at Karl Brooks Field.
