ST. GEORGE, Utah - The No. 5 Dixie State softball team endured slugfest in game two to finish off a sweep of Academy of Art with 10-1 and 11-6 wins on Saturday afternoon.
Dixie State (29-5, 20-0) extended its winning streak to 23 games and the catching tandem of
Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) and
Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) combined for eight hits, seven RBI, five runs and two home runs on the day.
Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) went 3 for 3 in game two with two RBI and scored six runs over the course of two games.
Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) started game one and picked up win No. 16 with a gritty three-hit game in five innings. She allowed one earned run, walked one and had one strikeout. She came in relief in game two to take over for
Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ). Duncan added 2.2 innings of work, giving up a two-run homer but kept the Urban Knights from making a comeback.Â
Feickert earned the win in the second game after 4.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. She struckout five and walked two.
Game 1 RecapThe early scoring trend for the Red Storm continued with the team hanging a five-spot in the bottom of the first.
Chavez scored on an RBI single by
Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) to start things off and Woodfall doubled to drive in
Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School).
Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) singled to left after a 10-pitch at-bat to plate Sherwin and Reiter.Â
Academy of Art got a run back in the top of the second with an RBI single but still trailed 5-1.
DSU exploded for five more in the third inning. Reiter got it going with a solo bomb to left.
Later in the inning
Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) doubled to score Hartman and an error prolonged the inning on a groundball from Chavez and Bassett scored. Johnson doubled and Beardshear singled, each driving in a run to give the Red Storm its 10-1 lead.
Duncan shut down the Urban Knights in the fourth and fifth to end it early.
Game 2 RecapThe first run of the game came thanks to Beardshear's deep fly ball to center and the speedy Bassett coming around to score on the sacrifice all the way from second.
Still in the first, Woodfall crushed a pitch over the wall in left with Chavez on base for a 3-0 lead. A throwing error in the third plated another run for the Red Storm.
The fourth inning gave Dixie State its first scare in a while with back-to-back home runs from Academy of Art, the first being a three-run shot to tie the score at 4-4.
DSU answered right back with Reiter doubling home
Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) and Reiter tagged up and came home on a liner from Hartman.
With one out in the fifth, Feickert ran into a jam with two on base. Duncan came in, got a ground ball and Hartman grabbed it, stepped on second and threw to first to end the threat and turn the double play, preserving the 6-4 edge.
Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) doubled in Chavez and Reiter added another RBI with a single through the right side for some insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth.
The long ball came back to bite the Red Storm again as the Urban Knights hit a two-run dinger to cut into the lead again in the sixth.
Dixie State kept up the pressure with three more runs in the bottom of the inning with two coming in an a double from Chavez and another thanks to Woodfall's fourth hit of the day and third of the game.
Academy of Art didn't have an answer this time and DSU completed the sweep with an 11-6 victory.
Dixie State takes on Division I opponent Southern Utah University on March 25 in Cedar City.
