Streak hits 11 games, Storm win twice at HPU

DSU baseball wins first two games in series of PacWest unbeatens

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – In a meeting between undefeated teams in Pacific West Conference action, the Dixie State baseball team picked up two wins over host Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park. The Red Storm (11-7, 6-0) came back from an early deficit to win game one, 5-2, and had some late heroics to take the nightcap in 10 innings, 7-5.

Senior right-hander Chance Abrath (Salt Lake City, UT/West) took the mound in the series opening win, tossing 7.1 innings and striking out five. He allowed two early HPU (11-4, 8-2) runs on four total hits before the relief trio of Kolton Brost (Monsa, UT/Payson), Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney) and Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) closed out the game surrendering two more hits.

The Storm loaded the bases in its half of the fourth inning and pushed across two runs on an error by the HPU second baseman on a grounder from Sam Hall (Ogden, UT/Bonneville). Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado) registered an RBI with a groundout to second to give DSU a 3-2 lead.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) tripled into right center to cash in Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain). The final insurance run came in the seventh inning. Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) singled up the middle with two outs, extending the inning. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) benefitted by taking a 2-2 pitch into center field for an RBI triple.

HPU threatened by getting the potential tying run to the plate with one out, but Alderman induced an inning-ending double play. Parker nailed down his fourth save of the season with a 1-2-3 frame that included two strikeouts.

McLaughlin led the Storm with three hits as DSU tallied 11 hits against the Sharks. HPU starter Rico Garcia took his first loss of the year allowing five runs on nine hits despite fanning nine Storm batters.

Game two started with a DSU run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. The third pitch of the game hit Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey), who advanced to second on a McLaughlin sacrifice. A groundout moved Morache to third base with two outs. Kline drew a walk to set the scene for the scoring action. Kline broke from first and swiped second base while Morache sped towards home for the 1-0 lead.

Senior righty John Conquy (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) struggled in the first inning, allowing the Shark three runs. He would calm down and not allow a hit until the fourth frame. Conquy did not factor in the final pitching decision, but he struck out eight batters over seven innings during his longest outing of the season.

DSU plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Kline kickstarted the inning with a double and later advanced to third after Gust reached on a throwing error. Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) cashed in an RBI with an infield single. Jacob Davison (Taylorsville, UT/Taylorsville) pushed across the Storm's second tally with a single to center field.

Heading into the seventh inning, DSU trailed 5-3. With one out, the Storm packed the bags with singles from McLaughlin and Kamachi followed by a Kline walk. Gust answered the call with a single to center field that plated the tying runs and eventually sending the game into extra innings.

HPU threatened in the ninth inning by getting the bags full of Sharks. Rustin Sveum (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) sturck out two and got a pop up to second base to end the threat.

The Storm responded in the next inning to take a two-run lead. Kline earned a lead off walk and Glover reached when the HPU pitcher mishandled his sacrifice attempt. Gust followed with a sac bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Kata broke through again, this time with a bunt single of his own to plate Kline with the go-ahead run. Glover later scored on another HPU throwing error.

Two runs was more than enough cushion for Parker, who tallied his second save of the day. He allowed a one-out single before getting a strike out and groundout to end the extra-inning affair. Sveum (1-0) earned the win in relief and Parker earned save number five for the season.

Kata had the only multi-hit game for Dixie State in the nightcap.

Dixie State will wrap up their weekend series against HPU on Sunday with another PacWest doubleheader beginning at noon Hawaiian (4 p.m. Mountain).
