Dixie State takes HPU series, win streak ended at 12 games

DSU wins Sunday opener 9-4, before dropping series finale

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Dixie State (12-8, 7-1) baseball ensured a series win over the Sharks of Hawai'i Pacific (12-6, 9-3) after winning Sunday's doubleheader opener 9-4, but an attempt to close out a sweep fell short as the host team ended the Storm's 12-game winning streak in the nightcap, 8-2.

Game 1

In game one, the Red Storm never trailed and a four-run rally in the ninth inning provided enough cushion for victory. Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) went 4-for-6 with three RBI and Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to pace Dixie State.

The duo factored into a 2-0 DSU lead after two innings. Kata singled with one out and scored on a single later in the frame from Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado). Morache followed with a single to right field, scoring Bice from third.

Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) lined a double in the third inning to plate Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) to bump the lead up to 3-0.

Hawai'i Pacific plated single tallies in the bottom of the third and sixth innings respectively, but could never tie the game or take the lead.

Both teams added a run in the seventh inning. For the Storm, Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) led off the frame with a base hit. He moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) and a single by Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho). On a double steal attempt, McLaughlin would score on a fielding error before Kline was picked off between first and second base to end the inning.

Dixie State benefitted from a pair of lead off walks and a sac bunt to place Kline and third base and Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) at second base with one out. Kata, staked to a 3-1 hitter's count, doubled into left center to plate the first two runs of the DSU rally. Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) and Morache each had RBI singles up the middle later in the frame.

Porter Clayton (Idaho Falls, ID/Bonneville) earned the win, tossing 6.2 innings and striking out five.

Game 2

Dixie State got on the board in the second inning when Kata continued his hot hitting with a RBI single, scoring Cam Gust (Riverton, UT/Riverton).

The Storm started Tanner Howell (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City) in the nightcap, but he ran into trouble in a rough third inning. After getting the first two outs, Howell saw two runs posted on a HPU single, walk and triple down the right field line. Three more consecutive singles ended Howell's night after 2.2 innings. Freshman Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) would see an error and two more singles continue the rally that ended with the Sharks posting seven runs to take an 8-1 lead.

DSU added a run in the fourth inning as Kline scored from third on wild pitch after leading off the frame with an opposite-field double.

HPU's Harley Holt was able to go the distance while holding Dixie State to five hits. He improved to 3-1 on the season.

Dixie State returns home beginning Saturday, March 21 for a PacWest doubleheader against Holy Names. First pitch from Bruce Hurst Field is at 4 p.m., with the second game anticipated to begin around 7 p.m.
