Red Storm take two from Sharks to start series

KANEOHE, Hawaii - Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) pitched the Dixie State softball team to a 2-1 win in game one and earned the save in a 6-4 victory in game two against the Hawaii Pacific Sharks on Friday night.

Catcher Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) collected three hits including a double and home run on the day. Dixie State improves to 23-5 on the year with its 17th consecutive victory. DSU also moves to 14-0 in the Pacific West Conference.

Game 1
The offense didn't click but the Red Storm rode Duncan's pitching prowess to another win.

Duncan went the distance again, allowing just three hits, an unearned run, walked two and struck out three to improve to 13-0.

Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) went 2 for 4 with an RBI, Reiter went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored while Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

DSU scored both runs in the second inning on back-to-back singles by Hartman and Bassett.

Duncan retired 10 in a row before allowing two hits in the fifth with no damage done. HPU scored its only run of the game on an error in left field in the seventh but nothing more.

Game 2
Dixie State struck first in game two with a solo home run from Reiter in the second inning.

HPU countered in the bottom half of the second with a run on an error and then took the lead with a sacrifice bunt for a 2-1 lead in the third.

The Red Storm put up four runs in the top of the fifth on five hits and with the benefit of two errors. Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) get the first hit with a double to get thing started.

The Sharks made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. DSU added one more run on a sacrifice fly by Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) but a two-run blast from HPU in the bottom half cut the lead to 6-4.

Duncan came in to relieve Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) and forced three ground balls after an error to finish off HPU and earn her first save of the year. Feickert went six-plus innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs. She overcame seven walks to earn her ninth victory of the year.

DSU closes out its Hawaiian trip with two more against the Sharks tomorrow. Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. MT.
