Dixie State sweeps Dominican

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) collected six hits and five RBI in two games to lead Dixie State over Dominican 8-0 and 17-9, completing a sweep of the weekend series.

Gelter went 2 for 3 in game one and 4 for 4 in game two, including a pair of doubles.

Speedster Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) had three triples and scored six times on the day with four coming in a wild game two where both teams combined for 24 hits and seven errors.

Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) pitched 3.1 innings in a shortened five-inning second game to win it, walking six batters but gave up just four hits. Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) improved to 8-0 with a two-hit shutout, walked two and struckout three in game one.

Game 1
The early scoring trend Dixie State started in the series happened again with a Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) double to score Bassett and set the tone. Gelter singled in another and a bases loaded walk to Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) made it 3-0.

Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) singled to left and plated Gelter and Sherwin for a 5-0 lead after one.

Gelter picked up another RBI on a single to left in the second and Duncan sat down her sixth-straight batter in the top of the third to keep the Penguins grounded.

The Red Storm added two more for an 8-0 advantage in the bottom half of the third on an RBI triple from Bassett and Chavez brought her home with a base knock.

Duncan allowed just her second hit over the next two innings and a pair of walks but no damage was done. Dixie State had enough to win in five innings again.

Game 2
Dominican took its first lead of the series with a run in the first inning. A single to center and an error put the Penguins in front 1-0.

DSU was quick to respond in the bottom half with Bassett scoring from third on a bunt but errors plagued the Red Storm in the second when two more came across.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third, Dixie State scored 10 runs on seven hits, while Dominican made four errors to help the cause for the Red Storm.

Bassett, Chavez and Courtney Hine all scored twice in the inning. Gelter doubled twice in the inning to drive in three of the runs. DSU led 11-3 heading into the top of the fourth.

Two runs came in for the Penguins on a throwing error with the bases loaded from Gelter with one out. Two more came in on a single to cut an eight-run lead down to four. Another single scored two more later in the inning to shrink the edge to 11-9.

Another quick response came for the Red Storm however, with Chavez driving in two on a single and Hine adding two more with a hit to right. The lead went back to 15-9 after four.

Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) allowed two singles in the top of the fifth but got a line out and fly out to left to end any threat of another run-filled inning.

Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) homered to center field leading off the bottom of the fifth and a double-steal play set up Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) to score the winning run for another five-inning win in 17-9 fashion.

Dixie State travels to Hawaii for a 12-game 10-day road trip. First up is a doubleheader with BYU-Hawaii on Friday, Mar. 6 at 4 p.m. MT.
