ST. GEORGE, Utah - Five players in double figures propelled the Dixie State women's basketball team to a 92-61 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday evening.
"It was a great team win for us tonight," head coach
Jenny Thigpin said. "I've said it before but this team is really hard to beat when we have five in double-figure scoring. I'm really proud of them for playing the way they did."
Freshman
Tianna Dougher (Bountiful, UT/Bountiful) logged her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) led Dixie State (7-14, 6-9) with 18 points while
Chermayne Moore (Pinole, CA/Hercules) had 15,
Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) added 14 points and nine rebounds and
Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) came up with 12 points.
"I've got to hand it to Tianna to step up as a freshman and play the way she did tonight," Thigpin added.
DSU shot 50 percent from the field, draining 32 of 64 attempts. Notre Dame de Namur (4-18, 2-13) shot just 28 percent and was outscored 40-26 in the paint by the Red Storm.
Both teams went scoreless for the first two minutes before Dixie State broke it open with a string of six straight over the next 60 seconds.
The Red Storm stayed out in front and Moore drained a triple to give DSU its first double-digit lead at 25-14 with 7:46 until halftime.
The advantage stretched to 16 points at one spot and Dixie State took a 41-28 lead into the locker room. The Red Storm shot 51.7 percent from the field in a blistering first half.
Notre Dame de Namur put together a run to start the second half and trimmed the edge down to 47-39 with 16:37 to go.
A 7-1 run from Dixie State put the home team back in control and up double digits over the next few minutes. A Miller made it 20 points with a 3-pointer inside of 10 minutes.Â
DSU cruised and led by as many as 33 in the final minutes, finishing off the Argos to the tune of 92-61.
The Red Storm are home again next week, hosting Chaminade at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
