ST. GEORGE, Utah - A close game throughout, the Dixie State women's basketball team was beat by Chaminade 78-74 on Thursday night.
Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) put in 22 points but the Red Storm's (7-15, 6-10) leading scorer was held off the board for the final 10:49 of the game. Tied 71-71, Chaminade (6-13, 6-9) outscored the Red Storm 7-3 in the final 2 minutes to win it.
"We've got to a better job controlling our turnovers and give a much better overall effort," head coach Jenny Thigpin. "We missed a lot of free throws and took too many possessions off."
Shantel Roberts (Rialto, CA/Miller) scored 11 points off the bench for a career high and Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) added 10 points and nine rebounds to go along with three steals. Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) scored seven points and had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Red Storm shot 37.1 percent for the game to the Silverswords 44.6 percent. Dixie State missed out on the free ones, making just 18 of 33 from the line.The teams went back and forth in the first half but Roberts came off the bench and added six points to put Dixie State up 29-28 inside of the six minute mark.
The Red Storm took a 38-36 lead into halftime. Miller scored 11 in the first half and Emerine added four points and six rebounds.
Miller continued to stay hot and scored seven of Dixie State's first 13 points to push the lead to 51-45 with 15:33 to go.
Chaminade stayed in it however at the 8:41 mark and retook the lead at 64-63.
Up by one with three minutes to go, the Silverswords drilled a 3-pointer for the corner to take a 71-67 lead.
Taylor Maynes (Salome, AZ/Salome) made two freebies on the next possession for DSU to stay within two.
Mann picked up an offensive board to tie it up at 71-71 with 2:12 on the clock.
Dixie State couldn't find the bottom of the basket over the next two minutes and came up short, dropping the contest 78-74.
DSU hosts Hilo on Saturday, the Play4Kay game at 5 p.m. at the Burns Arena. The team will wear pink socks and pink warmup shirts. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for the fight against breast cancer.
