ST. GEORGE, Utah -
Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) shutout Montana State-Billings and the Dixie State softball team won 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
"We've got to hand it to Duncan for her effort today," head coach
Randy Simkins said. "Not only did she pitch well but she made some terrific plays in the field. In a game where it's tight like that those are game changers."
Duncan pitched a complete game, her fourth of the year, scattering six singles and struck out two. She lowered her season ERA to 1.04. She also added gems in the field with an over the shoulder grab on a bloop over her head and a glove flip to first on a slow grounder for another putout.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth in a scoreless tie, control issues for MSUB's hurler, Megan Dettling, was the difference. Three walks and a hit batter scored the first run for Dixie State when Bearshear walked to bring home
Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School). The next batter
Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) walked to make it 2-0 with two outs.
Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) singled through the right side for just the third hit of the game for the Red Storm and first of the inning to plate two more runs.
Bassett stole second and a throwing error on a
Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) ground ball added two more runs for six-run sixth inning.
Duncan overcame two singles in the seventh to notch her fifth win of the year.Â
Dixie State will play Montana State-Billings in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Karl Brooks Field.
