ST. GEORGE, Utah - After a few games of quiet bats, the Dixie State softball team put together a walk-off 3-2 win and a five-run first inning en route to a 9-0 win to sweep a doubleheader against Montana State-Billings.
"It was great to get a fast start in game two," head coach
Randy Simkins said. "I was happy for
Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) to pitch well and to put together a good day at the plate."
Beardshear collected three hits on the day, including a solo home run, three RBI and scored two runs. The sophomore pitched game two to win her first game of the year, combining with freshman
Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo) for a one-hit shutout. Beardshear pitched four innings of one-hit ball, striking out one with no walks.
Game 1
DSU and MSUB were in a scoreless tie until the Yellowjackets pushed across a run with the bases loaded on a ground ball back to pitcher
Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School). Duncan's only play was to first allowing the run on the board.
The Red Storm answered in the bottom half to tie it up when Beardshear singled to left to drive in
Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School).
In the eighth inning, a hard liner to left was deep enough to score MSUB's Heather Tracy from third, taking a 2-1 edge.
Dixie State wouldn't roll over.
A sacrifice bunt from
Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) pushed
Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) to third after starting on second due to tiebreaker rules. Gelter walked and Beardshear brought Paulson home with a sacrifice fly to left and advance Gelter to second to tie the game at 2-2.
Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) finished the comeback with a single through the left side to score Gelter and win it 2-1.
Duncan pitched eight innings for her fifth complete game, improving to 6-0 on the season.
Game 2
Dixie State's offense picked up right where it left off.
After a sacrifice fly from Gelter put one on the board,
Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) blasted a no-doubter over the wall in left-center with two on to make it 4-0.
Wanting to get in on the action, Beardshear followed it up with a solo shot to center for back-to-back dingers.
The Red Storm added runs on RBI singles by
Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) and
Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) in the second and third innings for a 7-0 lead after three.
Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Woodfall came in on an RBI single from Johnson later in the fourth inning.
Barkwell relieved Beardshear in the top of the fifth, getting a strikeout for the final out to seal the shortened game for Dixie State.
DSU hosts Colorado Mesa on Tuesday, Feb. 24 in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
