Woodfall walk-off beats Humboldt, DSU splits on Sunday

LAS VEGAS - For the second day in a row, No. 3 Dixie State split at the Desert Stinger Tournament. The Red Storm beat No. 19 Humboldt State 2-1 in the early game with a walk-off home run by Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) but fell to No. 10 Cal State Monterey Bay 4-2 in the afternoon.

Dixie State (6-5) finished the Desert Stinger with a 2-3 mark, falling to Monterey Bay today. The Otters remain undefeated to start the season at 7-0.

The tournament set the Red Storm up with a difficult schedule and DSU dropped its three contests by a combined four runs, including two one-run ball games and one going to extra innings.

Game 1
Humboldt State struck first with an unearned run on an error at second base in the first inning.

Dixie State answered in the bottom of the third with an RBI single down the left field line from Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) to score Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele).

Bats were silent on both sides until Woodfall blasted a solo home run to left-center on the first pitch she saw leading off the bottom of the seventh to beat the Jacks. Woodfall went 2 for 3 in the game.

Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) improved to 4-0 after pitching her second-straight complete game. She gave up five hits, one walk, one unearned run and struck out four. She was named to the All-Tournament team following competition Sunday night.

Duncan was the lone player in the tournament to record a sub-1.00 earned run average, as she allowed just one earned run in 17 1/3 innings of work and threw two complete games with an ERA of 0.52. Duncan also struck out 15 batters and walked just two while surrendering 10 hits.

Chavez and Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) both went 2 for 3.

Game 2
Game two started out rough, with four runs coming across for the Otters in the top of the first inning. An RBI single and a bases-clearing double put Monterey Bay out to the early 4-0 advantage.

The quick start put the Red Storm in a hole early on and proved too much to dig out of in the end. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) suffered her third loss of the year after giving up four runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings of work.

DSU got on the board when Woodfall singled to drive in Hine after an error put her at third in the bottom of the fourth.

A second run for Dixie State came on a sacrifice fly from Chavez, scoring Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School). The scoring ended there for the Red Storm with just four hits on the day.

Dixie State will play its home opener Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m. at Karl Brooks Field.
