Dixie State rallies late to sting MSUB

Storm batter MSUB relievers to score eight times over last two innings

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State baseball staged a monumental comeback on Thursday night, coming back from four runs down in the final two innings with an eight-run spurt to defeat Montana State Billings 9-5 at Bruce Hurst Field.

Down 5-1 in the home half of the seventh inning, the Red Storm (2-7) put two runs on the board to foreshadow what would happen in the eighth inning. Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) walked and a pitch hit Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) early in the 7th inning. After a fielder's choice put runner on the corners, Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) bounced a single through the right side to score Watts. Later, a sacrifice fly by Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) brought DSU within two runs, 5-3.

The momentum continued in the eighth as Dixie State got the bases loaded with one out. Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado) knocked in the first run with his RBI single to left field. Morache followed suit with his third RBI of the game to tie the score, 5-5. Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) cashed in the go-ahead and the first of four more insurance with a single to center; a throw from the MSUB centerfielder sailed up the line at third and bounced into the visitors' dugout to advanced runners up 90 extra feet. A wild pitch allowed McLaughlin to cross home while another miscue – an errant throw to second base on a stole base attempt - cashed in the Storm's final tally.

Dixie State's comeback thwarted a quality start from MSUB (1-7) starting pitcher Jake Campeau. The right-hander scattered three runs on five hits over six innings.

Benefitting from the Storm's late offensive output was Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney), who earned his first win of the year. Starting pitcher Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) threw five solid innings – giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits. Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) closed the door in the ninth frame allowing one hit and striking out another.

Dixie State had 10 hits on the night, led by Bice in the nine spot with three. Morache and McLaughlin had two hits from the top of the lineup. Kevin Toon and Conner Holbrook each had three hits for MSUB.

The non-conference series continues Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
