Dixie State splits on day two at Desert Stinger

LAS VEGAS - After winning the first game of the day 7-1 over Central Washington, the Dixie State softball team dropped the second game to Western Washington 7-6 in eight innings to split day two of the Desert Stinger tournament.

Game 1
Dixie State (5-3) got back on track in the first game of the day against Central Washington.

Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) hit a two-run bomb in the top of the third to get the Red Storm on the board. Three-straight singles brought in Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) after Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School) knocked one up the middle. Paulson finished 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. while Woodfall went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Small ball and a sac bunt from Reiter put runs on second and third in the fourth and an RBI single by Gelter scored Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School).

Still in the fourth inning, Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) singled up the middle to drive in Gelter and Paulson, making it 4-0.

Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) continued to dominate the circle but gave up an unearned run on an error in the bottom of the fifth. She finished the day going the distance, surrendering just four hits, striking out six and didn't walk a batter to improve to 3-0.

Dixie State added one more in the seventh when Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) singled in pinch runner Sarah Good (Castle Rock, CO/Castle View) after Reiter singled to leadoff the inning.

Game 2
Tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Western Washington pushed across an unearned run with two outs on an RBI double after a throwing error set the table.

In the top of the seventh however, Dixie State retook the lead. Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) reached on a leadoff single and stole second. Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) singled up the middle to score her. Later in the inning, Hine scored on an error to put DSU up 6-5.

A two-out solo home run by the Vikings sent the game to extra innings.

Dixie State had two on the top of the eighth but a sharp liner to third doubled up the Red Storm to end the inning.

Western Washington was able to get a two-on, two-out single to win it in the eighth to upset Dixie State.

Bassett went 3 for 5 in the second game with two runs and a stolen base. Chavez went 2 for 3 with two RBI in game two as well where the Red Storm (5-3) recorded 10 base hits.
