Late rally not enough in 2-1 loss to No. 14 Augustana

LAS VEGAS - Opening the Desert Stinger Tournament against another ranked team, the No. 3 Dixie State softball team fell to No. 14 Augustana 2-1 on Friday night.

Dixie State (4-3) put together a rally in the top of the seventh but didn't have enough to extend the game.

The Red Storm got a one-out double from Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) and a single from Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) to get two on base. Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Bassett but a flyout from Mallory Paulson (Fruita, CO/Fruita Monument) ended the game.

Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) pitched five innings, giving up just three hits, striking out three but walked seven batters. Bassett went 2 for 2 with two walks and a run scored.

DSU outhit the Vikings 6-4 but left nine runners on base during the game.

Augustana (2-0) got on the board in the bottom of the second with a one-out single followed by three straight walks to bring in a run.

Dixie State had runners on base in each of the first four innings with its biggest threat coming in the fourth. A leadoff double by Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) started things off but she was out on a fielder's choice at third. An error put runners at the corners for DSU with just one out but the Red Storm couldn't bring them around.

The Vikings got some insurance in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

DSU will face Central Washington on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. PT, followed by a matchup with Western Washington at 2:00 p.m. PT.
