Storm Rolls Past Bristol in Exhibition Tune-Up, 78-50

Hill and Mathews pace DSU to victory in final pre-PacWest game

(BOX SCORE)

Sophomore Trevor Hill (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS) led three Storm players in double figures with a game-high 19 points to lead Dixie State to a 78-50 exhibition victory over Bristol University Thursday night in the Burns Arena.

DSU led wire-to-wire, scoring the first 10 points of the game – eight of which came at the free throw line – as the Storm raced out to a 23-7 lead. The Bears pulled to within nine points at 32-23 with four minutes remaining in the opening half, but Dixie State rattled off 14-6 run, including eight points from Hill, to take a 46-29 lead at the intermission.

Dixie State pushed the lead to 21 points at 61-40 early in the second stanza, with nine of the Storm's first 13 points coming from freshman Quincy Mathews (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS). DSU would extend the advantage to as many as 32 points in the frame before settling for the 28-point win.

Hill went 4-of-9 from the floor and 11-of-14 from the line to go along with six rebounds and two steals. Mathews finished with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while junior Josh Fuller (Rexburg, Idaho/Madison HS) poured in 10, and sophomore Zac Hunter (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) chipped in nine points off the bench.

Dixie State shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from floor and enjoyed a decided advantage at the foul line, where the Storm went 30-of-40 (.750), compared to just 4-of-5 at the charity stripe by the Bears. DSU also outrebounded Bristol 50-24, including a 16-5 edge on the offensive glass, with senior Mark Ogden Jr. (Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) pulling down a game-high 15 boards to go with eight points and two blocks.

"It was a good game for us," DSU Head Coach Jon Judkins said. "We had to have something this week, and we thought this would be better for us than a practice. We needed something like this to help us get some of the younger guys some more minutes. We're going to need them throughout the season."

The Bears hit on 20-of-58 of their shot attempts (.345), including a 6-of-16 clip (.375) from the perimeter. Jaylen Rose led Bristol with 10 points off the bench.

Dixie State will open the home portion of its 2015-16 Pacific West Conference slate and close out the calendar year against Azusa Pacific next Saturday, Dec. 19, at 3:30 p.m., before ringing in New Year with a home date against Chaminade on Tuesday, January 5, at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be played in the Burns Arena.
