A week after breaking several offensive records, Dixie State could not get anything going on that side of the ball as the Red Storm dropped its 2015 home finale to #13 Humboldt State, 57-14, Saturday night at Hansen Stadium. With the loss DSU fell to 3-6 on the year, 2-3 in GNAC play, while the Lumberjacks clinched the GNAC championship in improving to 8-1/6-0.
The Jacks led 16-0 after the first quarter of play, capitalizing on a DSU turnover to score their first points of the game just 3:20 into the period on a 32-yard touchdown completion from quarterback Robert Webber to receiver Derrick Brown. HSU's special teams then set up the Lumberjacks second score of the game as punter Cameron Southward pinned the Red Storm inside the 1-yard line after a 41-yard boot.
On DSU's first play of the possession, Storm running back
DeJon Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Arleta HS) was stopped just inside the end zone by Jack linebacker Taylor Mitchell for a safety and a 9-0 HSU lead. Humboldt State capitalized on its ensuing drive as Webber found Brown again from 8-yards out to give the Jacks a commanding three-score lead.
HSU struck for 24 more points in the second quarter, including a Southward 49-yard field goal and a Webber-to-Chase Krivashei 13-yard touchdown hook up, which pushed the lead to 26-0. The Lumberjacks then used a pair of big runs to close out the half, the first coming on a Webber 48-yard scamper, followed by a Ja'Quan Gardner 74-yard run on the first play after a DSU three-and-out, which gave Humboldt a comfortable 40-0 lead at the half.
Dixie State, which was held to just 128 yards of offense in the opening half, got on the scoreboard on its first possession of the third quarter as freshman quarterback
Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) led the Storm on a nine-play, 75-yard drive, which culminated with a 7-yard TD pass from Barney to senior receiver
Nate Stephens (Redding, Calif./Shasta HS). The duo also connected on a 39-yard pass play on a key third-and-seven to keep the drive alive to set up the score.
DSU also put together another long scoring drive, this one a 14-play, 82-yard drive that took 7:20 off the clock, which ended on a Coleman 4-yard touchdown with 11 minutes left in the game.
Dixie State finished with 261 yards of total offense, including 134 yards on the ground, with Barney accounting for 74 yards on 18 carries, while Coleman wound up with 51 yards and the touchdown. Barney went 11-for-21 passing for 127 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted twice, and Stephens ended up with five catches for 64 yards. Sophomore safety
Colton Olson (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) led the Storm defense with 10 total tackles, including six solo stops.
HSU racked up 545 yards, 421 of those coming on the ground, led by Gardner with 185 yards on 16 carries. Webber threw for 124 yards and three touchdowns to go with 45 yards rushing and another score.
Dixie State will close out the 2015 season, and its membership in the GNAC, next Saturday as the Storm travels to Ellensburg to face Central Washington. Kickoff is slated for 12 noon (PT), at Tomlinson Stadium.
