Storm Men Slip Past MSU Billings, 75-72

Hill's career-high 28 paces DSU to MSUB Tourney sweep

Sophomore Trevor Hill (Sandy, Utah/Alta HS) scored 16 of his career-high 28 points in the first half to lead Dixie State to a 75-72 win at Montana State Billings in the final game of the MSUB Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday night.

Dixie State never trailed as the Storm scored the game's first seven points on a pair of Mark Ogden Jr. (Spring Valley, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) jumpers and a Mason Sawyer (West Jordan, Utah/West Jordan HS) 3-pointer. The Yellowjackets battled back to tie the game at 12-12, but five-straight points from Hill started a 19-10 stretch, culminated with a Robbie Nielson (Gresham, Ore./Barlow HS) dunk, which gave DSU its biggest lead of the game at 31-22 with 6:57 to play until intermission. Dixie pushed the lead to as many as 10 points before settling for a 41-33 advantage at the break.

DSU maintained a five-to-nine point lead for most of the second half, though the Storm looked as if they were going to blow the game open midway through the frame as the Storm turned a 51-45 lead into a 63-49 (9:18 to go) advantage over a three-plus minute span. However the Yellowjackets had other ideas as MSUB rattled off nine-straight points to shave the lead back down to five at 63-58 with 6:22 remaining.

Hill would convert a conventional three-point play to push the DSU lead back up to eight at 70-62 with four minutes left. MSUB would again battle back to make a one-possession game on three separate occasions, but baskets from Hill and Nielson and clutch free throws down the stretch helped seal the Storm's tourney sweep.

"It was a good team win and a good weekend," DSU Head Coach Jon Judkins said. "We came up here to get two wins and it wasn't always pretty, but wins are wins and we'll take them."

Hill had his shot going as he hit on 11-of-14 of his field goal attempts and went 6-of-6 from the line, and also dished out a game-high six assists. Meanwhile Sawyer poured in 14 points with three 3-pointers, Ogden Jr. finished with 10 points and six rebounds, and Nielson just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high eight boards.

Dixie State shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the field, including a 47.1 clip (16-of-34) in the opening stanza. DSU and MSUB each finished with 29 rebounds.

Marc Matthews led three Yellowjackets in double figures with 22 points, while Jordan Perry poured in 14 points off the bench and Christian Evans chipped in 12.

Dixie State will open Pacific West Conference play next week as the Storm travels to southern California to face California Baptist on Thursday, Dec. 3, and Point Loma on Saturday, Dec. 5.
