GAME NOTES (PDF)
After starting the season with four out of five games at home, the Dixie State football team kicks off the road stretch of its 2015 campaign Saturday in Burnaby, B.C., Canada against the Clan of Simon Fraser University. The game marks the first of three consecutive road games in October, as the Storm get set to play all but one game on the road in the second half of the season.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Pacific Time (2 p.m. MT), as the Storm look for their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory of the season. Live audio coverage is scheduled on radio (ESPN Sports Radio 97.7 FM) and Internet (SouthernUtahLive.com), with
Keric Seegmiller providing play-by-play.
LAST MEETING: Oct. 4, 2014. A fumble recovery for a touchdown. A punt return for a touchdown. A safety. Take those 16 points off the scoreboard for visiting Simon Fraser, and Dixie State would have celebrated its first win of 2014. But, those three big plays in conjunction with one offensive touchdown and two field goals gave the Clan a 29-19 win over Dixie State at Hansen Stadium. Senior receiver
Nate Stephens (Redding, Calif./Shasta HS) led the way on offense with nine catches for 126 yards and junior linebacker
Trevor Oakley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) recorded eight tackles to help lead the defense.
ALL-TIME VS. SFU: Saturday's game marks the 10
th meeting between Dixie State and Simon Fraser. The teams first met on Oct. 2, 2010 in Burnaby, B.C., Canada. The Storm won the inaugural meeting, 28-21, and went on to win the next two in the series. SFU responded with its own three-game win streak. However, Dixie State has won two out of the last three against the Clan, and owns the series lead with a 5-4 mark.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: Dixie State recorded a season-high 500 yards of total offense last week in the loss to Western Oregon, marking just the fourth time in Division II history that the Storm have lost after gaining at least 500 yards of total offense. DSU had a breakout game in the passing column, as freshman quarterbacks
Blake Barney (St. George, Utah/Dixie HS) and
Tyson Blackner (Draper, Utah/Alta HS) combined to throw for 392 yards. Barney played the first half and completed 15-of-20 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown, while Blackner played the second half and completed 19-of-30 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Barney also led the team in rushing with 53 yards on 13 carries. Senior running back
DeJon Coleman (Los Angeles, Calif./Arleta HS) gained 23 yards on 10 carries, and the Storm finished with 108 yards rushing as a team.
KNOW YOUR FOE: Simon Fraser enters the game with an 0-3 overall record, as the Clan get set for their first official GNAC game of the season. SFU started the season with a 31-14 loss at Western Oregon before falling at home, 16-10, in a close game with Azusa Pacific. Central Washington dealt the Clan their third loss of the season, 40-7, a week later.
For the second time in as many weeks, the Storm will battle a predominantly passing team. Simon Fraser ranks seventh in the GNAC in rushing offense, averaging just 49.3 yards per game. However, despite having played two games less than most teams in the conference, the Clan rank third in passing with 229.7 yards per game. Senior quarterback Ryan Stanford has completed 64-of-106 passes for 632 yards and three interceptions. Stanford averages 210.7 yards per game, good enough for third in the GNAC.
Led by junior linebacker Jordan Herdman (36 tackles), Simon Fraser boasts the second-best rushing defense in the GNAC, allowing just 116.3 yards per game on the ground. The Clan rank seventh in passing defense, allowing 275 yards per game through the air.
