Dixie State won for the seventh time in eight matches as the Storm posted a 2-0 home victory over Hawai'i Pacific Thursday afternoon at Hansen Stadium. DSU improved to 9-6-0/7-4-0 in Pacific West Conference play, while the Sharks fell to 7-8-0, 4-6-0.
Both teams battled back and forth through most of a scoreless first half until the late in the 35
th-minute, when the Storm caught a break deep in the Shark penalty box as a clearing attempt deflected off an HPU defender and into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 Dixie State lead.
Dixie State maintained the one goal advantage through the remainder of the frame and most of the second half, though the Storm had chances to extend the lead as senior
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) and freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS) each had quality opportunities but could not put the ball away. However the Storm finally broke through midway through the 75
th-minute as junior
Aubri Detmer (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis HS) and Washington connected to set up a scoring chance for sophomore
Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS), who broke away to power a shot past the Shark goalkeeper and extend the DSU advantage to 2-0.
DSU's defense made the lead stand as the Storm held HPU to just eight shot attempts in the match, four on frame, to wrap up the team's sixth-shutout win of the year.
"This was a fast and physical game and we knew we couldn't afford any mistakes," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "We worked hard all over the field. It was a solid defensive effort alongside a dangerous attacking effort."
Dixie State finished with 11 shot attempts, six goal, led by McCloy who was credited with three shots, two on frame. Senior netminder
Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) made four saves to pick up her third shutout and fourth win in five outings overall.
Dixie State will close its 2015 home slate on Halloween Saturday, Oct. 31, against PacWest foe Chaminade at 10 a.m., in a match that will be played at nearby Dixie High School.
