Despite 15 total shot attempts Dixie State could only muster one goal as the Storm dropped their fifth-straight match, 2-1, at Dominican University Friday afternoon in San Rafael, Calif. DSU fell to 2-5-0. 0-3-0 in Pacific West Conference play, while the Penguins improved to 3-5-1, 3-1-0 in league play.
The Penguins scored twice in the span of four minutes early in the first half, with the first tally coming in the 20
th-minute when Lily Dubuc scored booted a shot from the left wing to the back post to give Dominican a 1-0 lead. DU tacked on the eventual game winner midway through the 24
th-minute as Kayla Karlsson scored off a throw-in to spot the Penguins a two-goal advantage.
Dixie State cut the deficit in half at 2-1 late in the 42
nd-minute on a throw-in of its own as a
Nichole Mertz (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) flip throw found the boot of freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS), who tucked the ball into the net for her first collegiate goal. However that would be as close as the Storm would get as both teams battled back and forth through a scoreless second half.
"This was a difficult game. We finally got back into our flow and weren't able to get the win," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "We were confident in the second half we were going to find that second goal. Although the shots came, we never found the goal. Bottom line, we have to do a better job defensively in front of our net."
DSU's 15 shot attempts were the second-most this season, while the Storm finished with season-high eight shots on frame. Washington accounted for five of Dixie's 15 attempts, while senior
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) recorded a match-high three shots on goal. Sophomore keeper
Danica Nusink (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) made three saves in a losing effort.
Dixie State returns to action Sunday with a PacWest match at Holy Names at 11 a.m. (PT) in Oakland, Calif.
