Dixie State tallied three second-half goals in a span of 14 minutes, including two off the boot of freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS), as the Storm snapped their five-match losing streak with a convincing 3-0 result at Holy Names Sunday afternoon in Oakland, Calif. With the win DSU improved to 3-5-0/1-3-0 in Pacific West Conference play, while the Hawks fell to 2-6-0/0-4-0.
After both teams played through a scoreless first half, the Storm offense turned up its intensity in the second half as DSU registered 14 of its season-high 20 shots in the stanza. Washington got the Storm on the board with her second goal in as many matches in the 55
th-minute as she took a throw in from freshman
Nichole Mertz (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) and powered a shot past HNU netminder Tiana Miyashiro from the right wing to spot DSU a 1-0 lead.
Then exactly 10 minutes later freshman
Kesley Rumsey (Provo, Utah/Timpview HS) recorded her first collegiate goal as she went top shelf from 25-yards out off a
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) feed to stake DSU to a 2-0 lead. Washington then struck again four minutes later when she corralled a loose ball and fired a shot past Miyashiro to extend the Storm advantage.
"We were excited to get our first conference win," Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "It was a strong performance from us with a great result. Tori [Washington] was so dangerous up top today and she is only going to continue to get better."
Washington finished with a match-high six shots, three on goal, while junior
Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS) had three attempts. Senior keeper
Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) made four saves in recording her first shutout victory of the season.
Dixie State returns home to welcome a pair of Island visitors to Hansen Stadium next week. DSU opens the homestand vs. BYU-Hawai'i on Thursday, Oct. 8, followed by a match against Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday, Oct. 10. Both matches will kick off at 4:30 p.m.
