Dixie State saw its six-match winning streak come to an end as the Storm dropped a first-place duel with Pacific West Conference co-leader Concordia, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in Irvine. The loss knocked DSU out of a tie atop the PacWest standings as the Storm fell to 8-6-0/6-4-0 in conference, while the Eagles remained in first place at 7-1-0, 8-2-2 overall.
Dixie State was in control for most of the first half and thought it had the match's first goal with 10 minutes to play in the opening half, but the Storm was whistled for offsides which negated the score.
The match remained scoreless through the first 70-plus minutes of play, but the game took a dramatic turn late in the 74
th-minute as a DSU defensive clearing attempt on an Eagles' throw-in turned into an own goal and a 1-0 Concordia lead. That play seemed to open the floodgates as the Eagles scored two more goals over the next 10 minutes to secure the victory.
Concordia outshot DSU 12-7 in the match. Freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS) led the Storm with four shots, one on frame, while junior
Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS) was credited with two shots, both on goal.
"This was a difficult result for us," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "We should have been up by two goals at halftime. Either way we gave up three goals at the end of the game and that can't happen. The own goal was disappointing to give up. We needed to respond but instead we let it affect us."
Dixie State returns home for its final two home matches of the 2015 regular season. The Storm will play host to Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 4:30 p.m., at Hansen Stadium. DSU will then close its home slate on Halloween Saturday, Oct. 31, vs. Chaminade at 10 a.m., in a match that will be played at nearby Dixie High School.
