Dixie State won for the seventh-time in eight matches as the Storm rallied for a 3-2 victory at Fresno Pacific Wednesday night, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11. With the win DSU improved to 10-8 overall, 7-3 in PacWest play, while the Sunbirds fell to 4-12 on the year, 4-7 in league action.
The Sunbirds took early control of set one by scoring five of the match's six points. The Storm slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually pulled even at 15-15. DSU then went on a 7-2 run, scoring five-straight points in one stretch, to claim the first set by four points.
FPU used a big run of its own to claim set two as the Sunbirds broke open an 8-8 game with a 12-5 spurt in racing to a 20-13 lead. DSU cut the deficit to three at 22-19 after a Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS) kill, but Fresno Pacific rattled off three-straight points to close the set out. The Sunbirds then took a 2-1 lead in the match despite Dixie State leading for the majority of the set. The Storm led 20-17 with service honors, but FPU rallied with five-straight point to bolt to a 22-20 lead. Dixie clawed back to tie the score at 23-23, but responded after a timeout with consecutive kills from Gabriela Macedo and Bissie DenHartog to wrap up the set win.
Dixie State battled back to win game four on the strength of a 7-2 run to close out the set. Tied at 18-18, the Storm scored three-straight points off of Sunbird attack errors, and got timely kills from Gianna Kioa (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird HS), Duryea and Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) to force a deciding fifth set. DSU opened the final frame with a 5-2 run thanks to a pair of FPU attack errors, a Kioa kill and consecutive spikes from Duryea.
The Storm kept the pressure on FPU as Lindsay Jones (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) and Makenzi Bird-Murphey (St. George, Utah/Snow Canyon HS) combined for kills, and Frei picked up an ace to push the Storm lead to 8-4 at the switch over. DSU pushed the lead to 12-6 thanks to a pair of Brette Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) kills, and closed out the comeback win with kills from Kioa and Jones.
"I am very proud of how we finished the match tonight," Head Coach Robyn Felder said. "We showed a lot of heart when we were down and never lost confidence. It truly was a team effort tonight."
For the second-straight match DSU had four players finish with double figures in kills, led by Duryea with 15. Bird-Murphey and Jones added 11 kills apiece and Delayne Daniel (American Fork, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) finished with 10. DSU recorded 65 kills for the match, with Frei recording 50 assists to go with six kills of her own, seven digs and five total blocks. DSU finished with nine total blocks for the match and 85 digs, with Alex Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) recording a game-high 32 digs.
Dixie State continues its five-match PacWest road swing with a pair of matches in the Bay Area, beginning with a game at Holy Names this Friday night in Oakland.
