Dixie State put together one its more dominant performances of the 2015 season Friday night as the Storm swept Holy Names in three sets, 25-14, 25-22, 25-10, in Oakland. Calif. DSU won for the eighth time in nine matches to improve to 11-8, 8-3 in Pacific West Conference play while the Hawks dropped to 2-18, 0-11.
DSU hit .409 for the match, the team's second-best hitting percentage of the season, including a .533 clip in the opening set that saw the Storm turn a 5-5 tie into a 16-8 lead en route to an 11-point win. Both teams battled back-and-forth for most of set two, and again the Storm would go on another run, this one a 5-1 spurt that erased 16-15 deficit and gave DSU a 20-17 lead. The Hawks got to within a point at 20-19 with service honors, but DSU ended the HNU rally by scoring five of the final seven points of the set, including a pair of kills by sophomore
Brette Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS), to take a commanding two-set lead in the match.
Dixie State trailed briefly to begin the final set, but the Storm would not be denied as DSU rattled of a decisive 19-6 run, which included an 11-1 stretch at one point, to put the match away.
The Storm recorded 36 kills in victory, 10 off the right arm of Anderson, while
Delayne Daniel (American Fork, Utah/Pleaseant Grove HS) and
Makenzi Bird-Murphey (St. George, Utah/Snow Canyon HS) finished with eight and seven kills, respectively. DSU's defense stepped up in a big way as the Storm held forced 24 HNU attack errors, which included eight total blocks, as the Hawks finished with a .092 hitting percentage.
"It was a great showing tonight for our offense," DSU Head Coach
