Women's Soccer Wins Fifth-Straight, Doubles Up AAU 4-2

McCloy scores two of the Storm's season-high four goals

Sophomore forward Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS) scored two of the Storm's season-high four goals in leading Dixie State to a 4-2 result at Academy of Art Saturday afternoon in San Francisco. DSU has won five-straight overall in improving to 7-5-0, 5-3-0 in Pacific West Conference play, while the Urban Knights fell to 4-8-0/3-4-0.

Both teams came out firing in the match's opening minutes as AAU got on the scoreboard first early in the fifth minute on a goal Rea Laudat from 12-yards out. Dixie State wasted little time answering as junior midfielder Aubri Detmer (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis HS) tallied her first goal of the year just 28 seconds later when she headed in a cross from sophomore Montana Tanner (Bountiful, Utah/Viewmont HS) to even the match at 1-1.

McCloy got into the act five minutes later as she took an entry pass from freshman Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS) and volleyed the ball to the near post and into the goal to stake DSU to a 2-1 lead. Academy of Art came back with the equalizer midway through the 38th minute as Laura Mick tracked down a through-ball from Laudat and chipped a shot over DSU goalie Sarah Beecher (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) to knot the score at 2-2.

The Storm again would respond with another quick goal just over two minutes later as McCloy secured the carom off a Tanner free kick and scored from the left side of the 18-box to put Dixie State back on top at 3-2. DSU would tack on an insurance goal with six minutes left as junior Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS) fired a straight-on shot from 35-yards out over the AAU keeper's head and into the net to close out the scoring.

"We feel like our attack is really coming together, but we need to address the amount of goals we are giving up," DSU Head Coach Kacey Bingham said. "We had to fight the whole 90 minutes to get or keep the lead. This has been a great growing week for us to show that we are capable of coming back after giving up early goals."

Dixie State outshot AAU 25-10 in the match, including a 13-7 edge on goal. McCloy finished with five shots, three on frame, while senior Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) had six shots, one on goal. Senior keeper Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) was credited with her fourth victory in goal as she came on in the second half and made two saves.

Dixie State concludes its four-match road swing next week as the Storm heads down to SoCal to face PacWest rival California Baptist on Thursday, Oct. 22, and league newcomer Concordia University on Saturday, Oct. 24.
