Dixie State scored three second-half goals, including two off the boot of senior forward
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS), as the Storm rallied to defeat Notre Dame de Namur, 3-2, in PacWest women's soccer action Thursday afternoon in Belmont, Calif. DSU won its fourth-straight match overall to improve to 6-5-0, 4-3-0 in conference play, while the Argonauts fell to 2-9-0, 2-4-0.
NDNU led 1-0 after the first 45 minutes of play on a Martiza Gomez goal that came in the 21st minute. Arollo netted the equalizer midway through the 49th-minute as she converted a penalty kick after a NDNU handball call inside the Argonaut 18-yard box. Arollo struck again 12 minutes later as she corralled a long pass from freshman
Tori Washington (South Jordan, Utah/Herriman HS) and beat the Argo keeper one-on-one to stake DSU to a 2-1 lead.
Dixie State added an insurance goal six minutes later as Arollo fired a cross from the left goal line to sophomore
Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS), who flicked the ball past the keeper to the far post and into the net to extend the advantage to 3-1. The McCloy goal proved to be the eventual game winner as the Argonauts would cut the Storm lead in half at 3-2 in the 77th-minute when Sarah Reyes fired home a rebound off a free kick. However that would be as close as NDNU would get as the Storm played out the remaining minutes to record the victory.
"It was a disappointing first half for us. We addressed our struggles at halftime and the team stepped up to play," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "It was the first time we have come back to win after going down a goal in a game this year. Jasmine [Arollo] was instrumental in our [second half] turnaround."
Dixie State outshot NDNU 17-6, including a 13-3 clip in the second half, and finished with an 11-5 edge in shots on goal. Arollo finished with five points in the match and led the team with seven shot attempts, five on frame. Senior keeper
Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) picked up her third win in goal on the year as she came on in the second half and recorded one save. Sophomore netminder
Sarah Beecher (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) started the match and stopped two of the three Argonaut shots on goal she faced.
Dixie State will close out the Bay Area portion of its current four-match road swing this Saturday at Academy of Art at 12 noon (PT) in San Francisco.
