Dixie State won its third-straight Pacific West Conference match as the Storm blanked Hawai'i Hilo, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Hansen Stadium. With the win DSU evened its record at 5-5-0 overall, 3-3-0 in PacWest play, while the Vulcans dropped to 4-2-3/3-2-0.
DSU led 2-0 at the half, with the first goal coming midway through the 16
th minute when senior
Jasmine Arollo (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) tucked in her third goal of the year past the drawn out Vulcan goalkeeper. The goal was set up by a strong throw-in by freshman
Nichole Mertz (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) and cross from junior
Megan Marchbanks (Provo, Utah/Springville HS).
The Storm tacked on their second goal with three minutes left in the period as senior
Kaisa Rogers (Springville, Utah/Springville HS) scored her third goal in two matches, which came off a rebound from an Arollo shot and touch from sophomore
Darian McCloy (Herriman, Utah/Herriman HS). DSU would add a late insurance goal with five minutes left in the match on a converted penalty kick attempt by junior
Alexis Torres (Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS).
Meanwhile, the Dixie State defensive side matched the offensive effort as the Storm held the Vulcans to just three shot attempts in the first half, and eight total in the match, including just one shot on frame.
"We are really starting to find our stride," DSU Head Coach
Kacey Bingham said. "We were happy with the attacking opportunities we were creating. Our midfield was a huge part of why we were successful today. Jasmine [Arollo] had a hand in all three goals today."
Dixie State finished with a season-high 33 shots, including 17 on goal, with Arollo leading the way with seven and four, respectively. DSU keeper
Sarah Beecher (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) picked up her second win in goal for the week as she did not face a shot in the first 45 minutes, while senior
Stacie Gubler (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) made one save in the second half.
Dixie State opens a four-match road swing next week as the Storm returns to the Bay Area to face Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, Oct. 15, followed by a match at Academy of Art on Saturday, Oct. 17.
