Men's Soccer Handles Hawai'i Hilo, 2-0

Storm post school-record fifth shut out win, extend shutout streak to 500+ minutes

Senior midfielder Santiago Alejandro (Oakley, Calif./Alhambra HS) scored twice to lead Dixie State's men's soccer team to a convincing 2-0 result over Hawai'i Hilo Saturday night at Hansen Stadium. The win, DSU's school-record fifth-straight – all by shutout, kept DSU atop the Pacific West Conference standings at 5-0-1, 7-1-1 overall, while the Vulcans fell to 1-9-0/0-5-0.

Alejandro tallied his first goal in the sixth minute as he corralled a loose ball deep in the Vulcan penalty box and chipped a shot into the goal from 5-yards out to stake DSU to a quick 1-0. Alejandro struck again 15 minutes later when he secured a punt from junior goalkeeper Bradley Trella (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler HS) and fired a strong shot from 30-yards out to put the Storm up 2-0.

That lead would be more than enough for the Dixie State defense as the Storm held Hawai'i Hilo to 13 shot attempts and only two on frame. Trella was once again strong in goal as he made two saves in posting his sixth shutout win of the season. DSU's defense extended its impressive shutout streak to 500:50, while Trella lowered his PacWest leading GAA to 0.43.

"We defended well again tonight," Head Coach Josh Pittman said. "Santiago [Alejandro] came up huge with two great goals and the team played very well. We're just happy to be on this roll, they don't come along too often and we're going to try and keep it going."

Dixie State opens a four-match road swing next week as the Storm returns to the Bay Area to face Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, Oct. 15, followed by a match at Academy of Art on Saturday, Oct. 17.
