Storm fends off Dominican, 86-83

Woods goes off for career numbers, Thompson eclipses 1,000 points

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Junior guard Collin Woods (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had a career-best 23 points off the bench and senior guard DeQuan Thompson (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy) became the fifth member of the Dixie State 1,000-point club to help the visiting Red Storm past Dominican, 86-83, at the Conlan Center. The victory broke a three-year losing skid in the "Icebox" and a subsequent three-game overall streak against the Penguins.

7305Woods was 6 of 9 from the field and connected on 11 of 14 charity shots to pace Dixie State (12-6, 9-3 PacWest) to over a 60 percent clip in the second half to erase a four-point deficit at the half. Thompson has 12 points off the bench in the opening 20 minutes, including a jumper at the 13:27 mark to give him the 1K-mark in his 102nd career game.

Half of the six 3-pointers for Dominican (8-12, 5-7 PacWest) in the first half came from Matt Hayes en route to 13 of his 16 points. Dominique Taplin tied Woods for the game-high with 23 points, 15 coming after the break.

A 3-pointer from freshman guard Trevor Hill (Sandy, UT/Alta) capped off an opening 5-0 run out of the locker to erase what was as high as an 11-point Dominican lead. The Penguins regrouped and outscored the Red Storm 22-14 to take a seven-point lead, 67-60, with nine minutes left in regulation.

Dixie State scored the next seven points to bring the game to a 67-67 stalemate. Woods sparked the run with a jumper in the paint that included a foul. Hill added a pair of free throws and senior Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) added two more charity shots.

With the teams swapping leads late, Woods put Dixie State up three with 38 seconds by slicing right through the middle of the Penguin defense for an uncontested lay-in. Hill later added a free throw to put DSU up, 86-82.

Dominican sliced the lead to three with a shot from the line and had two looks from behind the arc in the final five seconds that did not fall. Woods stymied the final attempt by blocking the shot right before the final buzzer.

Woods and Thompson pushed the Dixie State bench to scoring 51 of the club's 86 points. The Red Storm hit 52 percent of shots from the floor, including 5 of 8 from behind the arc. A huge advantage came from the line, where Dixie State took 43 attempts while hitting 31. The Penguins went to the line only 20 times in the game.

Dixie State returns to action on Saturday night in Kezar Pavilion against the Academy of Art University. Tip against the Urban Knights is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.
