Moore and Miller make it rain but DSU drops 89-78 game to Penguins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Chermayne Moore (Pinole, CA/Hercules) and Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) combined for 14 3-point buckets but the Dixie State women's basketball team fell to Dominican 89-78 on the road Thursday night.

Moore and Miller both went 7 of 15 from downtown, respectively. Moore finished with a career-best 23 points and Miller led DSU (5-13, 4-8) tying her season-high 26 point outing. Miller added five assists while Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) pulled down a season-best 16 rebounds.

Dixie State shot 38.4 percent including 15 of 34 from deep for 44.1 perent. Dominican (9-9, 6-6) was an efficient 5 of 10 from 3-point land and shot 48.5 percent from the field. The Red Storm suffered from the turnover bug, with 29 turning into 31 points for the home team.

"It's our overall effort right now," head coach Jenny Thigpin said. "We got comfortable early and relaxed. We have to learn to play a full game."

Midway through the first half the score was tied 22-22 but then the Penguins flew away with the lead.

Dominican outscored DSU 25-8 over the final nine minutes of the half to take a 42-24 lead into halftime.

A run from the Red Storm in the second half cut the lead back to single digits at 50-41 but the Penguins stretched it back to 18.

Miller and Moore's hot shooting kept things interesting but Dominican cooled off the Red Storm to win it 89-78.

Dixie State continues its road trip at Academy of Art on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. MT.
