Storm clips No. 11 Lancers, 82-79

Dixie State hands CBU first loss in the PacWest

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Three ranked teams up, three ranked teams downed.

Senior forward Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) posted his fifth double double of the season to help Dixie State knock off a previously unbeaten team in the PacWest for the second straight game. Holding off a late rally, the Red Storm defeated No. 11 California Baptist 82-79 on Monday night in the Burns Arena.

The win continued Dixie State's longest winning streak of the year to four, improving to 11-5 on the year and 8-2 in the PacWest. It was also the third consecutive victory over teams ranked in the Top 20 of the NABC national poll. CBU had its 10-game win string snapped, falling to 15-2 and 8-1 in league play.

Robbins led four players in double figures connecting on 10 of 17 shots from the field while pulling down 11 rebounds. Senior guard DeQuan Thompson (Las Vegas, NV/Lake Mead Christian Academy) followed with 16 points (6-10 FG, 4-4 FT). Mason Sawyer (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan), the PacWest Co-Player of the Week, had 13 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Mark Ogden Jr. (Spring Valley, CA/Steele Canyon) closed out the game with 11 points and five boards.

Dixie State shot 50 percent from the field in the opening half and used a 23-9 closing run over the final 8:04 of the first half to lead 40-33 at the break. The Storm made 8 of 12 shots form the floor, including three 3-point shots, and four foul shots while holding the Lancers to 3 of 12 over the same span. Freshman Trevor Hill (Sandy, UT/Alta) scored four points, a big steal and crucial rebound to turn the tide.

The Storm extended the lead to as many as 12 points midway through the second half.

CBU put together a 10-2 run to initially trim the deficit to three shy of the eight-minute mark. With 1:55 to play a Lancer jump shot once again put the DSU lead at three, 77-74.

In the final minute, Robbie Nielson (Gresham, OR/Barlow) made one free throw before CBU nailed a big triple. Feeling the pressure from the visitors, Thompson responded with two charity shots and Sawyer followed with two more free throws to ensure the three-point win.

Gelaun Wheelwright paced three CBU players in double figures with a game-high 24 points. Taj Spencer added 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Dixie State visits Azusa Pacific on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. (PT).

GAME NOTES: Dixie State improved to 6-2 in the all-time NCAA series against the Lancers … DSU has never lost to CBU at home (4-0 at the Burns, 2-2 at Van Dyne Gym) … The Storm sits in third place, alone, in the PacWest – a half game behind APU and CBU (both at 8-1) …  With talented teams in the league, Dixie State has played five games against ranked teams, going 4-1 so far.
