"Earlier in the day was a great team performance," head coach
Robyn Felder said. "We had a really balanced offense and great execution." This evening we never could quite mentally focus in long stretches."
Libero
Alex Anderson (Prescott, AZ/Prescott) was named to the All-Tournament team for her defensive performance over the weekend.
The Red Storm showed toughness in the first set in the first match, coming back from down five points to take the opening set 25-22. Edithza Urias (Bakersfield, CA/Golden Valley) had six kills and Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) added five to pace Dixie State early on. Rex led the first match with 11 total kills while Urias added 10 to match Makenzi Bird (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon ).
Set No. 2 was tied 13-13 before a kill from Urias, a Cal Poly Pomona error and another kill from Rex sparked some momentum to take a 17-14 edge over the Broncos. That was the separation the Red Storm needed and maintained the lead until Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany) shut the door with a kill to win it 25-22.
DSU went down early in the third set with Cal Poly Pomona leading 13-12 but went on a 7-2 run to regain the lead at 20-15. The Storm traded points back and forth but closed out the match 25-20 to complete the sweep.
In the nightcap, the first set was the best with the Storm going on a 5-0 run to swing the match in DSU's favor at 15-12. Dixie State controlled down the stretch and won it 25-19.
In set two the Falcons made a late run late to go ahead to sneak a victory at 25-23 and won the next two sets to seal the win. Weiland led the Red Storm with 13 kills.
"It definitely exposed our weaknesses and where we need to improve if we are going to contend this season," Felder said. "Overall we did some good things but we have a lot of room to grow and need to get better."
Dixie State will play another weekend tournament starting Thursday, Sept. 11 vs. Central Washington in Riverside, Calif.
