DSU picks up three-set victory in front of home crowd

Box Score ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Dixie State women's volleyball team dismantled Notre Dame de Namur in straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-15) to win it's Pacific West Conference opener on Friday night.

The Red Storm hit .376 for the match, led by Edithza Urias (Bakersfield, CA/Golden Valley) with 10 kills. DSU spread the attack around with Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) adding nine and Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany) picking up eight.

"It was a great offensive performance by the girls," head coach Robyn Felder said. "They came ready to play from the opening match. Once we got some of the nerves out a little bit the girls settled in and were able to play their game."

Dixie State's attack threw the Argonauts (0-8, 0-1) off balance all night, connecting at just a .025 clip.

"It was a great crowd with lots of energy in the gym," Felder said. "We are looking forward to getting better and better this year."

The first set went to the Red Storm pushed their lead to as many as eight points in the opening set. A late rally from NDNU kept it interesting but Dixie State was able to maintain control and ride out a 25-19 victory.

In set two, things were close at the 9-9 mark but DSU would string together some points to push the lead out to 18-12 to take the momentum. The Red Storm had some service errors down the stretch to give NDNU some chances but a final kill from Rex made it 2-0 in the match after a 25-20 victory in set two.

Dixie State got hot to start the third set, racing out to a 16-5 lead to force a timeout on the floor from the Argos. The regrouping would make NDNU more competitive as the match went on but DSU cruised to a 25-15 win to sweep the match.

The Red Storm are back in action Saturday at noon against Dominican in the Student Activities Center.
