PACWEST CHAMPS, LEAGUE RANKSDespite having a full weekend of league games to play, Dixie State clinched the 2014 PacWest baseball title after sweeping a doubleheader at Point Loma on April 26. Dixie State's championship, its first since 2011, is even more remarkable considering that the team started the season with seven-straight non-conference losses. The Red Storm entered their first PacWest series at California Baptist at 2-9, but won 3-of-4 from the preseason PacWest favorite and never looked back. Dixie State never lost a PacWest series, utilizing a powerhouse offense that ranks first in conference games in home runs (28), runs (221) and slugging percentage (.444), and second in batting average (.312).
Â
STARTING ROTATIONThe Dixie State starting pitcher quartet with a combined 22-6 record with a 3.80 ERA in 236.2 collective innings pitched. Highlighting the rotation is
John Conquy (Las Vegas, NV/Durango), who has gone eight innings or more in three of his last five starts. Conquy is 8-1 with a 2.04 ERA in 75 innings. He has the best winning percentage (.889) of any Dixie State pitcher with at least eight wins during a season.
Chance Abrath (Salt Lake City, UT/West) bounced back from his shortest outing, 2.2 innings against CSULA, with a pair of convincing wins against Point Loma and Fresno Pacific. Kort Christofferson broke a three-game winless string throwing four innings of two-run ball in a seven-inning DSU win over FPU. Kody Christofferson took a hard loss on Senior Day against the Sunbirds, but enters the regional with a 6-2 record.
STRONG BULLPEN STAFFDixie State's pitching bullpen staff has been stellar in 2014. Leading the charge late in ballgames is the nation's number five in saves, junior right-hander
Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville). His 12 saves set a Dixie State season record. Parker has allowed only three earned runs on 13 hits in 21.2 IP.
Matt Hill (Cypress, CA/Pacifica) and
Bubba Blau (Roy, UT/Roy) have been strong in the innings leading up to the ninth.
OFFENSIVE LEADERSFour players hit above .350 this season for the Red Storm, led by a .380 mark from outfielder
Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA/Southridge).
Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) leads the Storm starters with a .450 on-base percentage. Power numbers this season has steadily come from the trio of senior first basemen
Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV/Green Valley), junior DH
Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho), and senior outfielder
Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial). Kline paces the squad with 20 doubles while Blair added 18. Blair has reached base safely in 33 consecutive games. Blair swatted a team and PacWest-high 11 homeruns. Kaplan follows with nine home runs, just a year removed from a junior season with no homers. The power trio has combined for 137 RBIs for the Storm.
TOP-THREE FINISHESDixie State has finished among the top three in the PacWest Conference since becoming league members seven seasons ago (2008-2014), the only PacWest team to have done so. Under
Chris Pfatenhauer, DSU finished third last season with a 23-13 PacWest record and won the league in 2014. Prior to that, former coach Mike Littlewood (now at BYU) led Dixie State to conference titles in 2009 and 2011.
SCANNING THE REGIONAL FIELDNo. 1 seed and tourney host UC San Diego is coming off a sweep at the CCAA Tournament in Stockton. The Tritons are arguably the hottest team in the West, winning 9-of-10 and 14 of their last 17 games. Senior catcher Nick LaFace hit .357 for the year and is one of three potent hitters in the middle of the UCSD lineup. The Tritons are a tough team to keep down, especially when the Regional is played on their home field.
Â
No. 2 Chico State is battled tested. The team, looking for its ninth West Region title, has won more one-run and walkoff games this year than any other team in the tournament. The Wildcats have a tiny 2.57 team ERA led by a pair of aces at the top of their rotation. Nick Baker is 9-1 and was named CCAA Pitcher of the Year. Brad Lohse is unbeaten at 8-0 with a 1.46 ERA and had three consecutive shutouts earlier in the season. For the Wildcats, if they pitch well and play defense, they can win a lot of games handing the ball to closer Luke Barker, who has 14 saves.
Â
No. 3 California Baptist finished second in the PacWest behind Dixie State, but posted a stellar 8-1 record against CCAA teams in non-league games this year. Head coach Gary Adcock has led the Lancers to very good success in the program's three years in the NCAA. CBU won back-to-back NCCAA World Series titles before making the six-team NCAA field in their first year of eligibility. Andy Crowley leads CBU with a .406 batting average and 35 RBI. Trevor Oaks is the ace of the pitching staff with a 10-0 record and 1.56 ERA. He has allowed only 12 extra base hits all year, all doubles. Caleb Dirks is a solid closer on the back end of the staff. CBU has all the confidence to make the West Region champion come from the PacWest for the second consecutive year (Grand Canyon).
Â
No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona put a hurting on the Red Storm to open the season. The Broncos continued their dominance as the top hitting team in the CCAA. David Armendariz hit nine homers en route to being named CCAA Player of the Year. Steven Farnsworth won six games to top the CPP rotation. The Broncos have plenty of arm and options at their disposal in the bullpen. With a top-flight offense and key arms, Cal Poly Pomona can stampede past all of their competition in the Regional.
Â
No. 6 Sonoma State was the top-seeded team in the CCAA regular season, but consecutive games in the CCAA Tourney. The Seawolves split with Chico State to end the regular season, but saw series with CPP and UCSD rained out this year. George Asmus is their number one arm, channeling last year's Tino Martinez award winning starter Harmon Sidhu. He allowed just 8 earned runs in 68 innings to post a 6-1 record with a 1.06 ERA. Eric Ehlow had four homers and 29 RBI to lead Sonoma State. Veteran coach John Goelz leads SSU into the D-II postseason for the 11
th time and has plenty of bullpen weapons at his disposal. Don't count out the Seawolves, they won the CCAA regular season title for a reason.
