Offense erupts in series finale against Saints

Dixie State routs Saint Martin's to earn third win of series

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State baseball team scored early and often on Saturday to grab a 17-3 non-conference win over Saint Martin's at Bruce Hurst Field.
 
The Red Storm (9-10) led from the first inning and scored in every frame except the third. DSU finished with 17 hits, including three from left fielder Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA). Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV) knocked in six runs, Bartleson had four RBI, and Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan) plated three runners.
 
DSU's offense sparked early by knocking around SMU (3-11) southpaw starter Nick Mailhot for five of the team's six runs in the opening two innings. Kline began with a three-run home run in the opening inning. Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ) added a two-out RBI single in the second before Bartleson welcomed a new SMU pitcher into the game with a two-run blast to left field.
 
All of the offense supported a quality outing from Chance Abrath (Salt Lake City, UT). In six innings, Abrath (2-1) allowed two SMU runs on six hits while striking out two.
 
In the fourth inning, Kata scored from second base on a throwing error and Bartleson added a two-run single. DSU added a run in the fifth on a Kata sacrifice fly scoring Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV), who led off with a double.
 
Five more runs crossed for Dixie State in the sixth inning on a pair of two-run single from Kline and Kata. Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) closed the scoring thanks to an RBI single to center.
 
Kline's final run batted in posted in the seventh inning with a fielder's choice grounder to third base. Andrew Smith (Las Vegas, NV) plated Cody Clark (Las Vegas, NV) with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
 
Four pitchers – Kevin Dorantes (Las Vegas, NV), Taylor Stone (Sierra Vista, AZ), Bubba Blau (Roy, UT) and Mitchell Franek (Grand Lake, CO) – combined for one run, four hits and five strikeouts in three relief innings.
 
Dixie State now travels to the Bay Area for back-to-back series in Pacific West Conference play against Academy of Art and Holy Names. The opening game of a Monday doubleheader with the Urban Knights will begin at noon Pacific time from Laney College in Oakland, Calif.
