DSU takes all four from Holy Names

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Dixie State baseball completed a four-game sweep of the Holy Names Hawks on Saturday on the diamond at the College of Alameda. Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) homered in the opening game to support a quality outing from John Conquy (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) while Kevin Dorantes (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) shined out of the bullpen in the second game as the Red Storm won 6-1 and 5-4 in Pacific West Conference play.

GAME ONE

Conquy allowed the Hawks on the board in the first scattering three hits while the Storm defense committed an error. He settled down and allowed five more hits in his remain 5.1 innings of work.

Dixie State (16-11, 10-2 PacWest) evened the game in the third inning on a Dalton Gust (Riverton, UT/Cottonwood) single up the middle, scoring Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)). In the fourth, Kata hit a pop up deep enough to the shortstop side to allow Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) to tag up and score.

The lead increased to 3-1 in the fifth after Gust lead off with a double and advanced to third on a bunt single from Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain). Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA/Southridge) executed a groundball to the right side to push Gust home.

Insurance runs came in the seventh and eighth innings. Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) singled to right center with two outs to build a 4-1 advantage. Kaplan provided the exclamation mark with a two-run homer, his second in as many games.

Matt Hill (Cypress, CA/Pacifica) closed out the final 2.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Hawks (10-16, 0-12 PacWest) struck first for four runs against DSU starter Bronson Anderson (Lehi, UT/Lehi) in the first two innings. Anderson only allowed two hits, but HNU took advantage of timely hits.

Dorantes entered in the bottom of the second and allowed four hits in 4.1 magnificent relief frames. He earned his third win of the year after the Storm rallied for runs in two innings.

The lead slimmed to 4-2 in the Storm third after Kaplan's two-out groundball to third was misplayed to extend the inning. Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) singled up the middle during the next at-bat to turn the HNU miscue into a pair of DSU runs.

HNU held the lead until the sixth inning. McLaughlin singled to left to spark the go-ahead rally. Kamachi followed tow batters later with a base hit. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) brought the Storm within a run with a double down the left field line. Kaplan provided the game-changing swing, a single through the left side that brought Kamachi across with the tying run and Kline home with the eventual winning tally.

Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) put the potential tying run on base with a one-out walk in the seventh inning. A pair of fly balls to Bartleson in left field sealed the game and the Storm's first series sweep of the year.

Dixie State returns home on Friday, March 21, for a PacWest doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific. First pitch from Bruce Hurst Field is at 4 p.m. DSU plays its next four series at the comfy confines, three against PacWest opponents (HPU, Hawaii Hilo, Azusa Pacific) and one non-conference test against Cal State Los Angeles.
