Red Storm earn another series win behind Kamachi, Christoffersen

DSU doubles up the Knights, 10-5

Box Score

OAKLAND, Calif. – Another early offensive start in Wednesday's set finale pushed the Dixie State University baseball team to its fourth consecutive series win. Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) had three hits, three runs scored and three RBI leading the Red Storm to a 10-5 victory over the Academy of Art University in a Pacific West Conference game played on the baseball field at Laney College.

Kamachi began his solid day with a two-run triple in the first inning after Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) and Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA/Southridge) both singled. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho), the Pacific West Conference and NCBWA West Region Player of the Week, followed with a sacrifice fly to give Dixie State the 3-0 lead.

In the third, Kamachi found another extra base hit. This time it was an RBI double down the right field line to once again score Bartleson. Later in the inning, Blair and Kamachi executed a double steal to take second base and home plate, respectively.

The five-run cushion was plenty for DSU starter Kort Christoffersen (Ogden, UT/Weber). In his best start of the year, Christoffersen (1-2) scattered three runs (only one earned) on six hits over six innings. He also struck out seven, one more than the six he posted in his last two starts.

Dixie State (12-11, 6-2 PacWest) pushed the lead to 7-1 after a Dalton Gust (Riverton, UT/Cottonwood) RBI groundout in the fourth inning and a Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) RBI single in the fifth.

Gust added his second RBI of the day with a ground out in the seventh inning. McLaughlin added a run-scoring double later in the frame. Andrew Smith (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) earned an insurance RBI in the ninth inning after four consecutive walks sparked the frame.

Dixie State recorded 13 hits, McLaughlin joined Kamachi with a three-hit day.

Out of the DSU bullpen, Kevin Dorantes (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) allowed two runs in two innings. Mike Nowak (Banks, OR/Banks) closed the ninth inning allowing one hit in his third appearance of the season.

The Red Storm remains in the Bay Area to compete against the Holy Names Hawks. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. Pacific from Laney College.
