Late comeback falls short in the Bay

Storm drop third game of series to ART U

Box Score

OAKLAND, Calif. - Dixie State baseball staged a nice rally in the final two innings, but a well-placed ground ball allowed Academy of Art to walk off with a 7-6 win at Laney College in Pacific West Conference play.

Flipping the script from to games the day before, ART U (5-12, 1-4 PacWest) scored three runs in the first inning and had six runs in the first six innings off spot starter Mark Marinch (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) and reliever Rustin Sveum (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain).

Dixie State (11-11, 5-2 PacWest) tallied their first run in the fifth inning. Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA/Millennium) doubled with one out and advanced 90 feet with a single by Dalton Gust (Riverton, UT/Cottonwood). With an 0-1 count, Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) pulled a single down the left field line for an RBI.

Down 6-1 in the eighth, the Red Storm took advantage of some wildness from the Urban Knight bullpen. The bases loaded with nobody out on leadoff walks from Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) and Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA/Southridge) while a pitch hit Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial). ART U went to the bullpen again, but a wild pitch scored Blair. Two more runs plated after Gust swung at strike three in the dirt and the catcher's throw resulted in an error. Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) plated the Storm's fourth run of the inning with a two-out single to center.

The equalizing DSU run came with two outs in the ninth. Blair was walked to start action and his pinch runner, Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado), safely advanced on a sac bunt. Bice would score after an Urban Knight error by the pitcher.

Matt Hill (Cypress, CA/Pacifica) pitched through a spotless eighth inning, but two singles and a sacrifice bunt gave ART U runners at the corners with one out. A grounder to the right side could have been a double play, instead no outs were recorded and the game-winning run crossed home. Hill's record evened at 1-1 with the loss.

Dixie State seeks the series win Wednesday at 2 p.m. MT in the finale against the Knights.
