Storm open ART U series with DH sweep

Dixie State moves record above .500 for first time this season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Dixie State baseball team credo during Monday's doubleheader against Academy of Art was "Score big early".

Three runs in the series opener and four more in the first frame of the seven-inning second game pushed the Red Storm to a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep over the Urban Knights at Laney College, 6-3 and 7-1. With the victories, DSU climbs over the .500-mark for the first time this season with an 11-10 overall record, 5-1 in the PacWest.

GAME ONE

Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) had two of the six DSU hits in the opener. His first brought home Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) after a pair of lead off walks and a Nate Gercken wild pitch put two runners into scoring position. Two more runs scored on a Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) ground out and an Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA/Southridge) RBI single.

The Knights (4-12, 0-4 PacWest) responded with one run in the bottom of the first.

Kamachi again sparked the run scoring in the third inning with a leadoff double. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) immediately doubled down the left field line to plate Kamachi. Bartleson again singled for his second RBI. DSU added an insurance run in the eighth inning when a bloop double by Dalton Gust (Riverton, UT/Cottonwood) pushed Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) home.

John Conquy (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) allowed three runs on five hits over 6.1 innings to improve his record to 2-1. Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) allowed his first earned run of the year in the ninth, but closed the door to earn his sixth save.

GAME TWO

Four runs in the first proved to be enough as the Storm wrapped up game two behind a six solid frames from Bronson Anderson (Lehi, UT/Lehi).

Kamachi launched a two-run home run, his first of the year. Kris Kaplan (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron Memorial) followed later in the inning with an RBI double and Mike Umscheid (Beaverton, OR/Sunset) added a run-scoring single.

Anderson pitched six quality innings – one run, four hits and three strikeouts. The effort was good enough for his first win of the year (1-2).

With two outs in the third, Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) was plunked by a pitch while Kaplan singled setting the stage for Umschied. A double to center field capped the rally and built a 6-1 Storm lead.

ART U pitching wildness in the seventh pushed across DSU's final run. Bartleson and Kamachi drew walks and both advanced on a wild pitch. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) lifted a sacrifice fly for the run.

Bubba Blau (Roy, UT/Roy) struck out the side in the seventh in relief of Anderson.

Dixie State and ART U return to the field at Laney College on Tuesday for the third game of the four-game series beginning at 8 p.m. MT.
