Storm seize series with extra inning win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Down three runs entering the eighth inning, Dixie State baseball staged a late comeback to send Saturday's league contest into extra innings. In the twelfth, four walks pushed across the go-ahead run to give the Red Storm a 5-4 victory over California Baptist and the Pacific West Conference series win, three games to one.
 
CBU (15-3, 1-3 PacWest) took the lead in the third inning off starting pitcher Chance Abrath (Salt Lake City, UT/West), but the Red Storm (6-9, 3-1 PacWest) responded with small ball in the fourth. Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) led off with a bunt single and advanced on a throwing error. Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA/Millennium) beat out an infield single and both runners advance into scoring position on another CBU error. Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) lined the game-tying single to left field, scoring Kamachi.
 
The Lancers bumped the lead up to 4-1 after seven complete innings.
 
Dixie State closed within a run with a second RBI from McLaughlin in the eighth inning followed by a an RBI infield hit from Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho).
 
Down to their final out in the ninth inning, Mike Umscheid (Beaverton, OR/Sunset) cashed in Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado) with a single through the left side of the infield.
 
Both teams left runners stranded in the first few extra frames. DSU benefitted from four walks in the in the top of the 12th. McLaughlin led off the frame seeing four straight pitches out of the zone. Two batters later, Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) was intentionally walked and Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) followed with another free pass. The Lancers dove into the bullpen, but the result was the same. Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA/Southridge) saw a 3-1 pitch sail out of the strike zone for an RBI walk and the eventual game-winner.
 
Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville), who entered in the 11th with two outs and the potential CBU game-winner at second base, retired the side in order to earn his first win of the year.
 
Both teams smacked 14 hits. Kamachi led the Storm with four hits on the day while McLaughlin tallied three.
 
Dixie State returns home for a non-conference series with Saint Martin's of the GNAC beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. at Bruce Hurst Field.
