Storm claw back, but eventually drop third straight

Box Score

POMONA, Calif. – The Dixie State bats woke up early in Sunday's series finale matchup at Cal Poly Pomoma. Despite a comeback effort in the late frames, the Red Storm saw the Broncos walk off with a 6-5 win in 10 innings and a series sweep at Scolinos Field.

Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV) swatted three hits and knocked in two RBI for Dixie State (0-3). Four others added two safeties as the Storm outpaced CPP (6-0) 14 to 6 in the hit column.

The Red Storm staked starting pitcher Kody Christoffersen (Ogden, UT) an early 3-0 lead. Glover doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV). In the second frame, Glover brought home two with a two-out double.

Cal Poly Pomoma tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second and took a 5-3 lead off a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan) trimmed the lead to 5-4 with an RBI fielder's choice in the eighth. Blair reached on an error in the ninth and advanced to second after Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV) walked. Andrew Smith (Las Vegas, NV) entered as the game-tying pinch runner. An infield single from Mike Umscheid (Beaverton, OR) loaded the bags for Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ), who plated Smith reaching on an RBI fielder's choice.

The score remain tied until the bottom of the 10th. The leadoff runner reached on a hit off relief pitcher Bubba Blau (Roy, UT). CPP loaded the bags with one out on a pair of hit batters by Blau. Mitchell Franek (Grand Lake, CO) came in from the bullpen and offered the game-winning single to right. The Broncos have won four of their six games by one run this year.

Blau (0-1) took the loss in relief. Christoffersen allowed three runs in two innings, including five walks. Three pitchers combined to keep CPP to two runs on one hit in seven relief frames – Bronson Anderson (Lehi, UT), Matt Hill (Cypress, CA) and Evan Parker (Ogden, UT).

Dixie State is scheduled to return to action Friday afternoon (2 p.m.) against Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo.
