Second inning theatrics

Dixie State drops 2014 season opener

Box Score

POMONA, Calif. – Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV) notched his first RBI as a member of the Dixie State baseball team and Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV) had a team-best three hits, but a pair of one-out hits in the bottom of the second inning pushed Cal Poly Pomona to a 3-1 win Friday afternoon at Scolinos Field.

The Red Storm (0-1) scored in the top half of the second frame. Blair led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a balk. Glover pulled a ball into the right center gap to give DSU a 1-0 advantage.

CPP (4-0) responded with three runs in the subsequent half inning off Storm starter Kort Christoffersen (Ogden, UT). A walk and single followed a lead off double to load the bases. Nine-spot hitter Trevor Mango plated two with a double. Matt Munoz followed with an RBI single to cap the frame.

Dixie State left base runners aboard in each of the next five innings, including a bases loaded situation in the sixth inning. Blair again sparked the chance with a single, Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI) lined a single with two outs and pinch hitter Mike Umscheid (Beaverton, OR) walked to load the bags. Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) stranded all three after watching strike three.

Kristoffersen (0-1) allowed five hits over four innings. He walked two and fanned one batter. John Conquy (Las Vegas, NV) had a strong debut out of the bullpen throwing four scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts.

Max Bethell earned the win for the Broncos. He fanned six while allowing one run over five innings. Mango had three of the nine CPP hits.

Game two of the series is Saturday at noon Pacific (1 p.m. MT).
