Unbeaten Lancers win PacWest series opener

DSU allow five runs in the CBU seventh

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Entering the series with California Baptist, the Dixie State baseball team knew their opponent was undefeated and ranked as high as 3rd in the nation. With those credentials, DSU also knew that the Lancers play hard for all nine innings and have won frequently in the late innings.

Wednesday's game at Totman Stadium was no different.

Dixie State tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, but CBU answered after the stretch with five runs to win 8-3 in Pacific West Conference play.

Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) led the Red Storm (3-9, 0-1 PacWest) with three hits and an RBI.

DSU took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV) walked and Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ) singled. Johnson knocked in Glover with a single through the right side. McLaughlin scored on the next play after a Lancer throwing error.

California Baptist (15-0, 1-0 PacWest) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off DSU starter Kort Christoffersen (Ogden, UT) and added a third run in the fifth.

The Storm scored without a hit in the seventh. Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV) walked, advanced to third on a catching error, and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.

Mark Sanchez provided the big CBU in the next half inning, clearing the bases with a single to left. Taylor Stone (Sierra Vista, AZ) was tagged with the loss (0-2) after giving up the go-ahead run in the inning. Caleb Dirks picked up the win after striking out five in three relief innings.

CBU had a hit in every inning except the third, producing 15 hits for the game. Dixie State was held to five hits.

Games two and three of the series will be played as part of a doubleheader beginning at noon (1 p.m. Mountain).
