GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Dixie State once again had a chance to win its first game of the season Sunday against nationally ranked Colorado Mesa. The Mavs scored three times in the seventh inning to win 7-5, en route to sweeping Dixie State for the weekend.

The Red Storm (0-7) fell behind 4-0 in the first inning after the first pitch from starter Chance Abrath (Salt Lake City, UT) was lifted over the wall in left field for a home run and a two-out, bases-clearing double gave the Mavericks (4-0) early momentum.

DSU would pull ahead scoring five unanswered runs. In the third inning, Ty Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA) walked and Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ) followed with a double. Mike Umscheid (Beaverton, OR) doubled down the right field line to plate Johnson and McLaughlin. With two outs, Tyler Blair (Henderson, NV) hit an RBI single to center field.

Blair provided the final two Dixie State runs with a two-run homer early in the sixth inning.

The home team loaded the bases against relief pitcher Kody Christoffersen (Ogden, UT) after the seventh-inning stretch. Matt Hill (Cypress, CA) entered from the bullpen and surrendered a two-run single on his first pitch to put CMU up 6-5. Another run scored on a double play to build the lead to two.

DSU went down in order in the final two innings.

Abrath allowed four runs on three hits, but did not factor in the decision. Christoffersen dropped to 0-1 scattering three runs on four hits.

Dixie State and Colorado Mesa each had eight hits in the series finale. Blair led the Storm with two hits and three RBI. Umscheid and Austin Bartleson (Kennewick, WA) also had a pair of hits.

The Red Storm play their first games at home beginning with a Friday doubleheader against Montana State – Billings. First pitch is at 6 p.m. from Bruce Hurst Field.
