Senior day win for Dixie State over HPU

Honoring four seniors, DSU gets a 3-1 win over the Sharks

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Dixie State women's volleyball team honored its seniors on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19) win over Hawaii Pacific.

Maddie Rex (Tucson, AZ/Sabino), a senior, led the way with 14 kills, 10 digs, one ace and one solo block. The Red Storm (18-8, 15-3) hit .271 for the match and wrangled the Sharks (14-10, 12-6) to just a .104 clip. Lindsey Jones (Saint George, UT/Desert Hills) also posted 13 kills while Edithza Urias (Bakersfield, CA/Golden Valley) had 10 to go along with a solo block as well.

Seniors Kara Cotter (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane), Nicole Koehler (Sandy, UT/Alta), Kendahl Weiland (Albany, OR/West Albany) and Rex were all honored before the match.

Dixie State cruised in the first set, going on a 5-0 run midway through that put the game out of reach. Leading 14-10, Dixie State took advantage of HPU miscues and built up a 19-10 lead. The Red Storm took the opening set 25-14.

Set No. 2 required a big comeback, however. Trailing by as many as five and behind for most of the match, DSU scratched its way back to down one before a service error pushed the HPU edge 20-18. That would be the last point of the set the Sharks would gobble up for the set.

Kills by Urias, Weiland, and Rex gave the Storm the lead back. Later on Jones closed it out with back-to-back kills to win it 25-20.

Hawaii Pacific controlled the third set from the get-go and though it was close, the Sharks said no to a DSU comeback and won the third set 25-23.

Shelby Sorenson (Lehi, UT/Lehi) jump-started the fourth set with solid serving to score the first three points. The Red Storm gave up five straight points to HPU to put the Sharks back out in front 8-6. In a match of runs however, Dixie State scored six in a row to get back in it.

Another late spurt from the Red Storm was the deciding factor. Up just two, DSU powered its way to a six-point edge to seal the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.

Dixie State plays its final home match Sunday at 6 p.m. against Chaminade in the Student Activities Center.
